A smashed right hand thumb
Last Wednesday evening at the start of my adult-faith formation class I went to help a co-worker close the dividing wall between our two classrooms. He did not notice that I still had my thumb ...well, my hand was still holding and guiding the section so that it could go straight on the rail and shut. He pushed with all his might and closed the section on my thumb.
I continued teaching my class for an hour while holding a baggie with ice in my hand. When I went home I called my sister, Eva, and she told me to go straight to the hospital or I would not be able to sleep.
The ER doctor made a hole on my nail and ...oh, what a relief!! I took the next day off work.
I am find now. It was a big ouchy! Today is the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes and I will ask Her to continue to pray to Jesus for me.

Our wonderful CPC group
The Sisters who worked to prepare for our Chapter drove to our Cannon Beach home to complete the task of reading all the evaluations and preparing one last report for the community. Our facilitator, Sister Sue, who had to make several trips from her mission in Peru, was awesome! Sister Catherine, a missionary from a local parish and our captain in charge, was a very capable leader. Sister Rita, a present member of the leadership, was wonderful and very helpful. Sister Josephine, Sister Julie and myself, Sister Juanita, were three missionary Sisters who gave input and suggestions to the others, too.

New Leadership Team for S.S.M.O.
Hello, everyone,
Your prayers have been sincerely appreciated as the Sisters have been engaged in a week of Chapter events to set the direction for the next 5 years and to elect new leadership.
The SSMO Commitment Statement which will help provide a focus and direction for the Congregation for the next five years is:
Responding to Jesus’ mandate to love one another
and prompted by our charism,
we commit to using our gifts, skills and resources
to work for justice
as we journey in solidarity with the vulnerable, particularly the immigrant,
and as we care for God’s creation through sustainable practices.
The four Sisters who will serve as leaders of the SSMO Congregation (and, per our Ministries Corp Articles/Bylaws, as Members of the Min Corp) are:
Sr. Charlene Herinckx – Superior General
Sr. Catherine Hertel – Vicar General
Sr. Krista vonBorstel – General Councilor
Sr. Joyce Barsotti – General Councilor
Let us all praise God for the blessings bestowed on all of us….

We have a FOCUS statement!
Praise the Lord, the all-powerful One!
We, the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon, have arrived at a focus statement! Thanks be to God!
Our time together...beginning Saturday, January 16th, included a day of retreat. It was so good to put our brakes on our regular daily routine.
Our campus grounds are ever so beautiful, even in winter. And in our chapel, I feel all the spirits of our deceased Sisters (the "Environment Committee" placed 5 framed displays on one of our side altars containing little photos of all our Sisters now praying for us in heaven).
We started with eleven tentative focus statements...which were the result of our year-long discussions and meetings. It was important, we felt, to have the rudder of our community pointing in the direction we intentionally needed to go. We are mandated to respond to the Gospel message of Jesus, to give flesh to it by our Charism statement, and now, to point our “ship” in the direction to which our congregation, our Church and our world need for us to give our lived witness and testimony.
Our statement says: “Responding to Jesus’ mandate to love one another and prompted by our Charism, we commit to using our gifts, skills and resources to work for justice as we journey in solidarity with the vulnerable, particularly the immigrant, and as we care for God’s creation through sustainable practices.”
This morning, after accepting the focus statement, we heard from the 10 candidates who are discerning their call to leadership. Now, I ask you to join me in praying for their bold courage, hardy strength and prayerful spirit as we decide who will be our next Superior General and her three counselors.
